Which diapers should I buy?You know you want them, you have to have them, but you don't know where to start. We are here to help you. Types of diapers:It is true that we have a lot of choices now, but most diapers fall into one of three categories.
Our first group of diapers consists of flat diapers, prefold diapers, and shaped diapers. All 3 generally need folding (which is not a bad thing...promise), and they can fit right into Velcro covers with no need for pins. These diapers do need a diaper cover, and some Moms enjoy using pins or a Snappi fastener for a snugger, more leak proof fit. This group of diapers is generally the least expensive and does not have elastic or closures. Next we have the fitted diapers. Fitted diapers have elastic at the waist and legs for a snugger fit. They usually close with snaps or Velcro, and they tend to prevent leaks quite nicely. A diaper cover is used over a fitted diaper. Fitted diapers are more expensive than prefolds and less expensive than all-in-ones. The third type of diaper is called an all-in-one diaper, which means the diaper and cover are combined into one piece. This diaper closes with Velcro or snaps (depending on brand) and is similar in design and function to a disposable diaper except that you wash and reuse it. This is a popular diaper for outings and babysitters and generally the most expensive of the cloth diapers. Another type of diaper similar to an all-in-one is a pocket diaper. A pocket diaper has a layer of fleece or suedecloth on the inside to keep baby feeling dry and an outer of waterproofed polyester to contain leaks. An insert or prefold goes between the 2 layers (in the pocket) for absorbency.
So which ones do I choose? The choosing is the toughest part of using cloth diapers. Cost is a very big factor for some, and those on a budget generally choose the prefolds with covers. Prefolds are durable and easy to clean, infinitely adjustable, and cheap. They can be used as diapers and burp cloths and later for dust rags or to wax the family car. They will usually last through more than one child. If you can spend a little more, you may wish to try some fitted diapers too. Some Moms enjoy their convenience for nighttime or outings. They do tend to contain runny newborn breastfed poop quite well too. In general, fitted diapers may be a bit more absorbent than prefolds. Just remember more absorbent = bulkier = more drying time. As baby gets a bit older and you start venturing out, you may wish to try a few all-in-one diapers. They are easy to change when you are out and about at the zoo or the park or the mall. For toddlers who do not want to lie down to get changed or if you are in an icky bathroom (we've all been there), all-in-ones are pretty easy to change on a standing toddler. Pocket diapers are an especially popular choice for nighttime because the inside fleece or suedecloth lining keeps baby feeling dry. They are also easy and trim for outings. We'd all like to find that one perfect diaper, but it is common to use more than one type of cloth diaper. For instance, you might use prefolds at home during the day, fitted diapers at night, and fitted or all-in-one diapers on outings. A sampler package may help you make your decision. A sampler pack will allow you to try an assortment of diapers so that you can find out which diapers work for you and your baby before you invest in a lot of diapers. If you decide to go whole hog and buy everything at once, wash and try a sample first before washing all of the diapers. That way if something does not work for your baby, you will be able to return it and find something that does. Next |
