Not anymore! We're a long way from the days of old when moms folded and pinned and pulled rubber pants over everything. Instead of pinning you can:
Choose fitted or all-in-one diapers
Fold prefolds into a wrap cover...no pins needed
Use a Snappi diaper fastener (a T-shaped fastener with grips)
Now if you want to try pins, it's easier than you think! You will be an expert in less than a day. Once you learn how to use pins, you'll be able to pin your prefolds snugly, use pull-on covers with prefolds, or even use flat diapers and try out all kinds of fun folds, and then pin those puppies for a nice snug fit.
Pinning is simple. You will not stick your baby because your fingers will be between the pin and your baby. If you are nervous at first, pin one side of the diaper before baby is in it, slip baby's leg in the pinned side, and then pin the other side. If you have trouble getting your pin through the diaper (just go through a few layers), stick pins into a bar of soap or wax or run them through your hair close to your scalp before pinning. The oils from your hair will lubricate the pin tip, making it easier to push the pin through the fabric.
Some advantages of pinning include:
You can get a nice snug fit - no more droopy drawers!
If baby learns how to take his cover off, that diaper won't hit the floor.
You can use ANY type of diaper and cover with no worries.
Tip: Point pins away from baby when pinning the diaper...head of pin should point out towards baby's side not in towards tummy.
